Lunaria

hat, dress, capelet, and belt, hand and machine embroidery, confetti-dot metallic knit, velvet, lamé, faux fur, wire, beads, sequins

The black branching structure of the hat was created with sturdy wire covered with black lamé fabric. The purple organza fabric has reverse smocking to gather the fabric for the crown of the hat. The black rippling edges of the fabric were created by satin stitching over heavy fishing line. This technique is referred to as “lettuce” edging as it resembles the curly edges of leaf lettuce.

Lettuce edging and free form reverse smocking were also used on the dress and capelet to gather the fabric to fit the waist and neckline. Purple organza and iridescent lamé are layered over an ice blue metallic confetti-dot knit fabric. The layering softens the sequin-like reflection of the knit, to suggest the soft twinkle of stars in moonlight.

The long tails of the capelet and dress were inspired by the long tails on the wings of a luna moth.
