In The Shallows

In a favorite place, a creek empties into the lake forming a large area of shallows with many cattails and other shallow water plants. If I look very carefully, I sometimes see a green heron hiding back in among the fallen tree branches and plants, holding very still as he waits for small fish to come by. In this same area, fishermen often catch catfish. One day when my son caught one, I was surprised to learn that catfish make squawking noises. And so I imagined the catfish and the heron together. Would they talk to each other? Do they communicate in other ways? Are they competing for the same small fish to eat?
